ENSURING ALL CHILDREN MEET THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS
The Goal: By the end of Key Stage 2 every child has met the minimum standard of water safety knowledge and swimming ability as stated in the national curriculum for physical education programme of study.
The Challenge: Statutory guidance for the national curriculum for physical education programme of study in England states that:
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2. In particular, pupils should be taught to:
1. swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres;
2. use a range of strokes effectively;
3. perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
