Curriculum Statement

Intent

At Burnwood Community School we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is accessible to all. Our curriculum spans from Nursery to Year 6 and builds towards an end- point which helps children to know more, remember more and do more. It is a fully sequenced and ambitious curriculum which allows children to build knowledge and understanding over time. The design of the curriculum enables us to achieve well-structed, knowledge rich lessons with meaningful assessment approaches. Children will learn the English and Maths skills needed to progress in their education and pupils love of learning is nurtured giving them the tools they need for life.

Our children come to school with different experiences which impacts on vocabulary and understanding throughout their school life. We intend to provide lessons both in and outside the classroom where learning is taught in a range of ways which encourage learners to want to explore and know more.

We want our children to leave Burnwood Community School prepared for their next stages in their education with high aspirations for their adult life.

Implementation

At Burnwood, our curriculum is carefully developed and planned to ensure a clear sequence of lessons and exciting learning opportunities for all subjects. To ensure that children know more and remember more, retrieval practises are embedded across the curriculum in all subjects- both core and foundation.

Children are taught English (including phonics) and Mathematics daily alongside weekly non-core subject lessons, in KS2 children are taught Spanish as part of our curriculum. Our curriculum delivery is further enhanced through the use of external specialist teachers in music and PE- these specialists work alongside leaders and teachers to ensure full curriculum coverage.

Enrichment is woven into our planning, teaching and assessment process- we link worthwhile trips and visits with our curriculum to give children a wealth of experiences that will extend their knowledge further. Children also have the opportunity to attend a vast range of extra-curricular clubs. Personal development and citizenship are integrated into the wider school life, children have opportunities to be ambassadors in a range of subjects. Year 6 children have leadership responsibilities and KS2 children are able to vote and be a part of the school council.

Impact

The measure of our curriculum is to ensure children gain the appropriate age-related knowledge and skills which will enable them to progress further in their educational journey. We believe that our curriculum allows us to measure progress for all children regardless of specific needs and differing starting point.

We are proud that when pupils leave Burnwood Community School they are well-rounded individuals who have a secure understanding of the knowledge and skills taught throughout their time with us. They also understand how to be socially, morally, spiritually and culturally responsible and recognise that endeavouring to be their best is something to be proud of.
